Rick Rubin, music production assistant behind Beastie Boys and Johnny Cash, signs global deal with Endeavor content


Rick rubin has stories, and he’s going to start telling them in movies and on TV.

The extraordinary music producer behind Beastie Boys, Slayer’s Reign in blood, Tom petty’s Wild flowers and the belated reinvention of Johnny Cash, signed a global agreement with Content of the effort.

The partnership precedes the release of McCartney, 3, 2, 1, a six-part documentary series from Endeavor Content that saw Rubin and the Beatle explore the latter’s music and marked the first time the Beatles soundtracks left Abbey Road. This launches July 16 on Hulu.

Rubin, who co-founded Def Jam Recordings, starred in and produced Shangri-La, a four-part documentary series for Showtime directed by Morgan Neville and Jeff Malmberg that took place at Rubin’s Malibu recording studio.

The deal will see Rubin expand the famous Shangri La recording studios to film and television.

Rubin will receive resources, development funds, frameworks and infrastructure support through Film 45, the production company founded by Peter Berg and acquired by Endeavor Content in 2019. Leila Mattimore, who is co-EP on McCartney, 3, 2, 1, lead development efforts on behalf of the partnership.

Rubin also co-produces and hosts the podcast series. Scrached disk, with Malcolm Gladwell and animates a GQ digital series of conversations with artists such as Pharrell Williams, Kevin Abstract and Kendrick Lamar.

Rubin, who has also produced hit albums for Run-DMC, Red Hot Chili Peppers, System of a Down and others, is represented by WME.
